Donkey Kong 64

CAMEOS AND REFERENCES

List of known cameos and references in Donkey Kong 64.

NOTE: These have all been verified as TRUE by Flying Omelette.

Cross-Series: After earning 15 Banana Medals, go to Cranky's Lab in any of the stages. You'll unlock Jetpac, an old computer game made by Rare that has similar elements to their NES game, Solar Jetman. If you earn 5,000 points, you'll get a Rareware Coin that allows you to play the game any time from the Mystery Menu. (You must also have photographed 6 Banana Fairies for this option to appear in your menu.)

Intra-Series: You can also unlock the original Donkey Kong arcade game. The arcade machine itself is located in Frantic Factory. Have Donkey Kong "gorilla grab" the lever to activate it. Beat it once for a Golden Banana. Beat it again to earn an N64 Coin. This coin plus 6 photographed Banana Fairies will allow you to play the game any time from your Mystery Menu.

Cross-Series: The Kongs can throw oranges as a weapon. This is an idea begotten from Conga the gorilla in Banjo-Kazooie.

Game Console: On the wall of DK's treehouse, there is a photo (or painting) of a Dolphin. "Dolphin" was the codename for the Gamecube at the time Donkey Kong 64 was made.

Game Console: The super-secret ending (the one you get for collecting everything in the game) shows the characters auditioning for a Dolphin Donkey Kong game (which, since Nintendo sold Rare, would never come to be).

Intra-Series: Cranky's phonograph and DK's boombox from Donkey Kong Country are in DK's Treehouse. There is also a red steel girder, which is also from Donkey Kong Country, but dates back as far as the original Donkey Kong arcade game.

Movie Reference: When the Totem Pole in Angry Aztec says, "FEED ME!!", it's a possible reference to Little Shop of Horrors.

Movie Reference: When B. Locker says, "Show me the bananas!", it's a possible reference to the line "Show me the money!" from Jerry Maguire.

Cross-Series: The red feathers that Tiny shoots from her crossbow are more or less Kazooie feathers from Banjo-Kazooie.

Programmers: The Rareware logo can be found in the following places:

  • Above the entrance to Tiny's racetrack in Frantic Factory.
  • On the coin you win for getting 5,000 points in Jetpac.
  • On the giant Golden Banana that the Banana Fairy gives you.
  • On the outside of the boxing ring that you fight K. Rool in.
  • On Snide's blueprint schematic in his HQ.

Programmers: The Nintendo and/or N64 logo can be found in the following places:

  • On the Golden Bananas.
  • On the coin you win from playing the arcade Donkey Kong game in Frantic Factory.
  • On the outside of the boxing ring that you fight K. Rool in.
  • On the walls of the Rambi bonus game.
  • In Candy Kong's house.

Movie Reference: Chunky Kong will perform Tarzan's yell if left idle. (He also does it in the opening DK Rap sequence.)

Celebrity: Whenever you win a Golden Banana from Snide, he gives it to you by means of a series of contraptions in his HQ that are clearly inspired by the Rube Goldberg designs.

Intra-Series: Gloomy Galleon is a specific Donkey Kong Country 2 reference. Not only because of the pirate theme, but inside some of the sunken ships, you can find pictures of the Captain K. Rool artwork from that game hanging on the walls.

Cross-Series: Part of the music in Angry Aztec is borrowed from the Gobi's Valley theme in Banjo-Kazooie. Part of the music in Gloomy Galleon is borrowed from the Rusty Bucket Bay music also from Banjo-Kazooie. Finally, part of the Creepy Castle music is borrowed from the Mad Monster Mansion music in B-K. It is only a few notes from each that are used, but they're very distinct notes.

Intra-Series: The music in Jungle Japes is a remix of the jungle theme (called "DK Island Swing") from Donkey Kong Country.

Musical Cameo: When you enter the museum in Creepy Castle, the music that plays as you first walk in is Bach's Tocatta & Fugue. (This is a reference in itself, but it might also be an obscure reference to Donkey Kong Jr., because that same tune was played at the beginning of the game.)

TV Show: The idea for the Crystal Coconuts seems to have been taken from the Donkey Kong Country TV show (which is the only original element from that show that has been brought into the games that I'm aware of). Thank goodness Cranky doesn't make such a big deal out of protecting them in this game, though.

Literature: Lanky's race against the rabbit seems to be a reference to the classic children's story, "The Tortoise and the Hare", especially since the rabbit is napping when you approach him. (That was how the hare lost the race to the tortoise in the story.)

Movie Reference: At one point in Fungi Forest, Chunky is attacked by giant killer tomatoes. If that's not a reference to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, I don't know what is.

Character Cameo: If you photograph 15 Banana Fairies, you can unlock Krusha, the big buff blue Kremling from the original Donkey Kong Country game, in the multiplayer battle mode.
