Oddities 36: Switched at Birth? Part 15

Furby

Gizmo from Gremlins

??? from Creatures

FO's Comment: Okay, the Furby and Gizmo comparison is an obvious one that's been well-known for a long time, but I still give credit to Agisuro for submitting it. I thought I may as well throw in the Creatures thing from the last SAB article, too.

Luna and Amok from Thundercats

Mud Imp and Beasts from Chrono Trigger
Submitted by Deathamster, "Luna and Amok from the Thundercats look almost EXACTLY like that Mud Imp riding on the Beasts in Chrono Trigger in that cave that leads into Mount Woe. I can't believe how much of a resemblance there is here! Just change the Mud Imp and Beasts' skin color to white and stick a purple wig on the Mud Imp's head and there you go!"

FO's Comment: I see what DH is saying, but this comparison would work so much better if I had an actual screenshot of the Mud Imp and Beasts instead of just the sprite images, as he's not actually riding on them the way he does in the game. Luna/Amok picture came from, Thundercat Zone.

Thundercats Logo

Mercury Cougar Logo

Submitted by Deathamster.

FO's Comment: First a Dodge Ram Logo lookalike and now a Mercury Cougar. This one's so obvious, I'm surprised we didn't have it sooner.

Cackletta from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Invader Zim

Submitted by Deven711, "Cackletta, the evil witch that steals Princess Peach's voice, sorta looks like Invader Zim from the Nickelodeon cartoons. Want proof? She has sharp teeth like he does, she has purple eyes, and she's also green! Maybe the guys at Nintendo have been watching too many cartoons on Nickelodeon. Am I right?"

FO's Comment: It's really bizarre, but it could just be coincidence. They're also both making Alex from A Clockwork Orange faces.

Cookie from Panic Restaurant

Mario from SMB2

Submitted by Black Jack (Mike Waters), "To anyone familiar with Panic Restaurant, anyone would see this one coming. One of the first things players will notice is that the main character, Cookie, looks more like Mario than Luigi does! Were Mario and Luigi disappointed that Cookie didn't follow in their footsteps and become a plumber like them, and instead opted for the hazardous job of working at a restaurant with things like giant boiling pots that could fit at least 10 of Cookie into them? That would explain why Mario and Luigi never talk about him. For comparison, here are pics from the 1991 NES Game Atlas (screenshot from SMB2) and from the Panic Restaurant instruction booklet. Both Mario and Cookie are even fighting bosses here - Fryguy and a mutant microwave!"

FO's Comment: One of these days, I need to get better screenshots than that...

Zelos from Life Force

Naju from Guardian Legend

Submitted by iso / exo, "I was reading your review of Life Force and the orb (looks like its from a boss fight) in one of the final pictures in the review looks strangely reminiscient of Guardian Legend's Naju."

FO's Comment: It'd be great if Zelos ate Naju.

Johnny 5 from Short Circuit

NASA Rovers Spirit & Oppurtunity

Submitted by Rick Trujillo, "Not really video game related, but cool. (With the Mars rovers all over the news.)"

FO's Comment: I think it's hilarious when important stuff in real life so closely resembles lowbrow entertainment.

Voice Actor
Scott McNeill

Metallica's
James Hetfield

Submitted by Pokejedservo, "Well, aside from some facial hair differences these two suprisingly resemble one another."

FO's Comment: I'll leave this here for now, but I'm really more interested in game characters that look like real people or other characters. Not real people who kinda, sorta look like each other.

Tommy Tallarico
(Electric Playground, Judgment Day)

Voice Actor
Brian Drummond

Submitted by Pokejedservo, "The resemblance is even stronger here..."

FO's Comment: Okay, maybe, but again, let's try to get away from these real people comparisons and get back to the series' roots (only let's do a better job of it than Final Fantasy 9 did.)

Kagome from Inu-Yasha

Rei "Sailor Mars" Hino

Submitted by Pokejedservo

FO's Comment: I've seen people say that Rumiko Takahashi tends to rip off her character designs from other places. I dunno. It's hard for me to judge when so many anime characters look alike anyway.

Voice Actor Brad Swaile

Nightcrawler from X-Men: Evolution

Submitted by Pokejedservo, "Not only did Brad voice him, but the artists took the time to design Nightcrawler after him. It's not uncommon in big-budget animated movies, but it's not everyday you'd see that on a decent-budgeted animated series."

FO's Note: It's interesting trivia, but I really don't want to go down this road. Pretty much every animated Disney movie in recent years has characters whose looks are based on the actors who play them. However, this reminds me of the time I saw the voice actor who played Zelda on The Legend of Zelda cartoon series and she looked so much like her character, I was nearly floored.

Basketball Coach Mark Cuban

Commodus from Gladiator

Submitted by Red Clawbot, "I'll tell you who've got to be switched at birth are Commodus from Gladiator and Mark Cuban (the guy who yells at his basketball team you see on TV). I think Cuban is the bigger, fatter, uglier twin. Not only do they look suspiciously alike and have pathetic mediocre personalities, but they also make complete asses out of themselves in their respective sport arenas, where they are the number one spectators. If Commodus wasn't wearing so much make-up, he'd look just like Cuban. I wouldn't be suprised if that Commodus was actually inspired by him, eh he he he he."

FO's Comment: Normally, I'd frown on this kind of submission, but that's just too hilarious to omit.

??? from Creatures

Smeagol from Lord of the Rings

Submitted by Deathspork, "The thing on The Creatures cover = female Smeagol."

FO's Comment: This is what happens when lazy character designers create an all-purpose generic monster. It can look like pretty much anything.

Kefka from Final Fantasy 6

Scary Monsters era David Bowie

Submitted by Hobbes, "They don't look exactly alike, but their make up is strikingly similar."

FO's Comment: NOW we're talking!

Setzer from Final Fantasy 6

Legolas from Lord of the Rings

Submitted by Hobbes.

FO's Comment: Legolas looks more like Setzer than the new version of Setzer that's in Kingdom Hearts 2. But then again, MOST things look more like Setzer than the Kingdom Hearts 2 version of Setzer.

Irvine from Final Fantasy 8

Smooth Criminal era Michael Jackson

FO's Comment: Okay, SAB Hunters, you're slipping. I'm really surprised no one submitted this before I noticed it myself.

My Pet Monster

Robin Williams

FO's Comment: It helps that My Pet Monster is the same color blue as the Genie from Aladdin.
